BierKashi Bokashi is SD Microbes’ original fermented compost input, made from upcycled organic spent brewers grains and organic wheat bran. It is designed to support Bokashi-style composting and organic waste fermentation using traditional lactic acid fermentation methods.
Unlike many Bokashi products, we do not use rice bran fillers. Our formula uses a blend of organic spent beer grains and organic red flake wheat bran, providing a high-volume, high-quality fermented substrate made entirely from recycled and organic materials.
Each batch is produced using our in-house BrewKashi microbial culture and is fermented for three weeks before being carefully dried for shelf stability and ease of use.
What is BierKashi Bokashi?
BierKashi Bokashi is made from organic spent brewers grain sourced from Protector Brewing Company — San Diego’s first and only organic brewery — combined with organic red flake wheat bran. This blend is inoculated with our BrewKashi culture, which includes lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei) and other naturally occurring fermentation microbes.
The material is then fermented under controlled conditions and dried for storage and shipping.
Common Uses
Food Scrap Fermentation Designed for Bokashi-style composting of kitchen scraps, including materials such as fruits, vegetables, bread, grains, and other organic waste.

I have finally moved into a space where I can compost regularly, and I have found such an easy groove with bokashi composting. I use 5 gal buckets with the SD Microbes Airscape Lid and a gamma lid to seal it all up. I don't bother with draining it. After reading someone else's review, I started using less bokashi and found I can get by with adding about 2TBS bokashi each time I add about 2 inches of food waste. I have had no gross mold. After filling the bucket and letting it ferment for 2 weeks, I dump it into my larger compost bin with some carbon source and give it a good mix. I am no expert at composting, but this system seems to be breaking down so fast, and my little compost pile is giving off good heat and has no funky smells. An easy and sustainable process for me, and I feel so good no longer adding my family's kitchen waste to the landfill. I can't wait to get the finished compost into my garden!
Bokashi composting is one of my types of compost. I also compost in 5 gal buckets in my raised garden, have a compost sack, vermicompost and make leaf mold. If I have the ingredients, I start a Berkeley pile. I am a master composter and also a little composting rabid. Since I switched over to SD Microbes bokashi , I am very happy. I have a continuous bucket going baseline. Sometimes 2 buckets. If I decide to go out of town for a few weeks (road trip) I take it with me. I am currently timing a bucket to finish up, ferment and then bury in my soil factory before I leave for a month. I do more than one type of composting because we eat mostly raw vegan and generate a lot of scraps and coffee grounds. I personally prefer to not overwhelm my bokashi bucket. I do 2 2" layers, each with the bran, then reseal. BTW, I notice in some posted review pictures, some folks use lots of bran. I use one scoop and sprinkle. Repeat. My old bokashi system had a drain. The motivating force to switch was the previous bokashi bran molded - no matter what. I lost 2 five gallon buckets of bran to fulminating white mold. That's an expensive loss. Today I ran my fingers though my completed soil factory contents and noticed many worms. Will still add one more 5 gal container to this current batch before I incorporate it into my garden. Looked black and smelled great.
Love Bokashi! I’ve been ordering it from SD Microbes for about two years now and have had a great experience. We live in a rural area and have a garden. Bokashi has helped me break down the food scraps we accumulate very quickly and turn it into food for our garden. The plants love it! I’ve put it in the food garden and also the flower garden. I store it in large OXO containers under my sink and have a little scoop. So glad this is a thing. Trying to compost was too much for me.
Just an excellent product all around. Been using it since kingjay put me on and I have been using it down here in Barbados to basically break down craps n topdressing. Keep up the good work. Also I'll be trying that vermicompost very soon. Continued success 😎
We have moved to another state and needed to build up our garden soil. I have been using Bokashi for several years now and it’s a dependable way to compost and make rich soil. I ordered the usual 5 lb bag and this time it smells a little bit sour than previous bags. I hope this batch turns out good.
I've gotten my permaculture certificate from Fullerton College. I'm converting much of my property to a permaculture project. Here is a 5 gallon bucket of bokashi composte that I'm starting to use in my beds.
I use it for bokashi composting in our suburban home. Makes great soil top dressing for our vegetable garden. I work off a 3 bucket system and use about 10 lbs of BIERKASHI per year with family of 5

Thank you, Momoyo! We're so happy to hear you're enjoying our Bokashi bran and that it smells good even before the bucket is full. It’s great to know you’ve had consistently good results over the years. We appreciate your continued support!
I like being able to compost in a small space and a regular 5 gallon bucket. My buckets have lids so I can stack multiple buckets for saving space. The compost smells funny in the end but once buried in the garden I never smell it again!
Tested by FluffyDiesel of industrial strength pee. This bierkashi is amazing. It does not soak up the urine, however it really neutralizes the stink. She will NOT use it as litter, however. She will pee into the box where I have punched holes; the liquid drips down into another box which is lined with the bierkashi. Works great. I then take the soiled bierkashi outside into my garden, leave it alone, let the elements neutralize it, and after a few weeks, it goes into the woods.
I started using the Bietkashi method starting March 2023, and my first bucket is featured in this picture. I bought the kit because I wanted to reduce my food waste and hoped to use the resulting compost in a part of my yard where I had struggled to even just use a shovel due to very poor quality dirt.
I mixed in the first bucket of compost and let it sit for a couple of months. Last month I dug through the soil where I put the compost shown in this photo that I took 5 months prior. I was in tears because the difference in the quality of soil was so dramatically improved. After struggling with the dirt for so long, now my shovel sinks into the ground like a hot knife in butter. The soil color is richer, the smell of the dirt is so lovely… night and day. I will never stop using this product!!!
Love it. I don't have time to be making my own bokashi mix like i used to. I use it for my kitchen scraps then add to soil that I need to build on this soil barren, volcano rock landscape... wish me luck that I get a food forest going🤞🏾 thanks SB team. It's good stuff!
We've had great luck with the Bierkashi grains and air-loc lids. Every raised bed we added the compost to this season has outperformed our raised beds with brand new fresh soil. It's easy to do & we are loving how much food scrape waste we are reducing. Success!
We have been using bierkashi in our compost bin and as a regular treatment in our waste system for several years.
Seems to help the processes so we are happy.
Have been adding thus into my organic compost after each few layers, as well as topping a few of my pots with it. So far I've seen lovely mycelium mats and everything is loving it! Great product!
bokaski system has been such a game changer, no worries about ratio of green/brown, no rodent issues, much faster than traditional composting. SD microbes bran is exceptional, in quality and quantity. I also purchased the Airscape lid, which I highly recommend.
I have been using Bokashi from SD microbes for a little over a year now. I had no idea what I was really doing at first. But, I got two stainless steel containers from Behrens which are made in USA and do not contain lead (very concerned about using plastics and other chemicals around things I will eventually eat or go into the soil). They are very difficult to get the lid off at times because it is on there tightly, but that is what you want with Bokashi. I also use an in home compost pail and really start the process there. I put a little bokashi in the bottom and then every time I add scraps, which I cut up because they break down faster, I add another layer of Bokashi on top. When I take the pail out to the garage to empty it, I do not need to add more Bokashi. It has been working out very well for us. We are an average family but eat mostly fresh foods. Outdoor compost was not working out well for us. It was time consuming and we don’t have access to large leaves. I do find with the Bokashi, that it doesn’t break paper down well so I open up my teabags and empty the contents into my bin. When the scraps have fermented properly, they go into our garden.
I love this stuff - I use it in all of my soil blends (including seed starting!) whenever I have it on hand. It’s like hammer-starting an engine: as long as there’s organic materials and/or a food source in your soil mix, bokashi will get the rest of the cycle cranking! Seedlings consistently emerge more resilient, and I’ve had almost no damping off since I added it to my protocol. Occupy your soil real estate with the good guys! ✨
I'm new to Bokashi and really like how it works. Just started my second bucket while the first one is fermenting. Also added some to my house plants. TY!!
I use bierkashi to ferment all my food scraps and spent coffee that I collect from various convenience stores. No matter the food scraps (meat dairy, pasta etc) bierkashi helps to keep my compost makings from smelling up the kitchen and garage until I have collected enough to add to my many composting systems. I also use it when I top dress my garden beds to help add biology to my soil. Great stuff!
Great stuff at a great price. I mainly use for bokashi composting, but also add a handful along with any top dressing in the garden. Great results with both!
This will always be my favorite thing to spend my money on. Hands down best bokashi on the market. Andrew and his team produces the best microbes in the country. Much love to the crew!
