Our Story:
Better Soil Starts at the Compost Level
SD Microbes was built after seeing too many soil companies cut corners with cheap filler composts, manure-heavy materials, and inconsistent bulk blends. We believe better soil starts at the compost level — with clean inputs, balanced minerals, active biology, and products made for growers who care about results.
SD Microbes was built to do things differently.
We believe great soil does not start with a bagged fertilizer program or a marketing label. It starts at the compost level. If the compost, vermicompost, and base ingredients are not clean, balanced, and biologically active, the finished soil will always have limitations.
That belief is the foundation of everything we make.
Soil Balancing Starts at the Compost Level
At SD Microbes, we believe soil balancing begins long before a soil blend is mixed. It starts with the quality of the compost, the biology of the vermicompost, the mineral profile of the base materials, and the cleanliness of the inputs.
Too many commercial soil mixes rely on cheap compost, manure-heavy materials, wood fines, or filler ingredients to create volume. That may keep costs down, but it often leads to inconsistent performance, poor nutrient balance, excess salts, and frustrated growers.
We take a different approach.
Our products are built around clean, plant-based composting, vermicompost production, microbial diversity, and mineral balance. The goal is to create soil products that support root health, nutrient cycling, moisture retention, and long-term plant performance.
Our Story
SD Microbes began in 2018 with BierKashi Bokashi, our original fermented composting product made from upcycled spent beer grains. BierKashi was created to help people recycle food waste, improve compost systems, and bring more beneficial biology back into the soil.
As more customers started using our bokashi and asking for better compost and soil options, we expanded into plant-based vermicompost and premium living soil blends.
What started as a bokashi company has grown into a soil-focused business producing compost-based growing media, vermicompost, top dressings, and soil amendments for home gardeners, landscapers, farms, nurseries, and serious growers throughout San Diego County.
What Makes SD Microbes Different
We are not trying to make the cheapest soil on the market. We are trying to make soil that actually works.
Our focus is on:
Clean inputs
We avoid the cheap, dirty, inconsistent materials that are common in many bulk soil and compost products.
Plant-based composting
We focus heavily on plant-based compost and vermicompost systems instead of relying on manure-heavy composts.
Biology first
Healthy soil is alive. We build products that support microbes, fungi, nutrient cycling, and root development.
Balanced mineral nutrition
We believe soil performance comes from balance, not just dumping in nutrients. A good soil should support the plant through biology, structure, and proper mineral relationships.
Real growing results
Our products are made for people who actually grow — gardeners, farmers, landscapers, cannabis growers, orchard owners, and nursery operators who need consistent performance.
Our Products
BierKashi Bokashi
BierKashi Bokashi is the original SD Microbes product. Made with upcycled spent beer grains, it helps ferment food waste, improve composting, and bring beneficial microbial activity into garden systems.
Bokashi is a simple way to reduce waste, improve compost piles, feed worm bins, and build better soil over time.
Plant-Based Vermicompost
Our vermicompost is one of the core products behind SD Microbes. It is made through a natural worm composting process using clean, plant-based materials.
We produce vermicompost for growers who want a biologically active amendment without the problems often found in low-quality bulk composts. It can be used in raised beds, potting soil, gardens, orchards, vineyards, cannabis soil systems, compost teas, extracts, and top dress applications.
Living Potting Soil & Compost-Based Soil Blends
Our living soil blends are built for growers who want more than cheap bagged soil. We produce premium potting soils and compost-based growing media using high-quality ingredients such as plant-based compost, vermicompost, coco coir, pumice, rice hulls, and balanced mineral amendments.
Our goal is to create soil that supports strong roots, healthy biology, moisture retention, and consistent plant growth.
Made for San Diego Growing Conditions
San Diego growers deal with tough soil conditions: compacted native soil, low organic matter, dry summers, inconsistent irrigation, poor drainage, and low-quality bulk compost options.
SD Microbes products are made with these local conditions in mind.
We serve gardeners, farms, landscapers, nurseries, orchards, vineyards, and growers throughout Ramona, San Diego, Poway, Escondido, Julian, Santa Ysabel, Lakeside, El Cajon, La Mesa, Vista, Oceanside, Temecula, and the surrounding areas.

Our Mission
Our mission is to raise the standard for soil, compost, and vermicompost in San Diego County.
We believe growers deserve better than manure-heavy compost, cheap filler soil, and inconsistent bulk blends. Whether you are filling a raised bed, planting an orchard, building living soil, or improving a landscape, the quality of the compost and soil biology matters.
SD Microbes exists to help people grow healthier plants by starting with healthier soil.
Healthy soil starts with better compost. Better compost starts with better inputs.
